On power use
I dug out my Kill A Watt and decided to measure power use.
I had big plans to test various tasks against how much power is being used and it was completely underwhelming (in the best possible way).
I’m going to assume the cost of power is $0.20 per Kilowatt-Hour. That’s the average in the US.
When the Framework Desktop is just sitting there not doing anything, it’s about 11 Watts of power. This is pretty low. About $1.60 for the month if I do nothing it sits idle the whole time. Of course it’s not just sitting idle all the time (but at this moment it is idle more than it’s not).
If I try to stress the Framework, it doesn’t seem to really matter what I do. Big models, small models, long running, short running. They all seem to draw about 150 Watts. That’s less than I expected’. It also ruined what I thought would be interesting data :)
The Framework specs do say it uses 140W when “boosted”, so if I had done the minimum amount of research, this would not be surprising to me.
If I ran this thing full on 24/7, we’re talking about $22 per month.
